Before the Rain Reaches Us

This photograph was taken during a family walk on Orewa Beach as a storm system rolled in from the sea. The sky was heavy and layered, rain falling in the distance, while a brief opening in the cloud allowed light to break through. Two birds cut across the frame, momentarily suspended between weather and water.

What drew me in was the tension in the scene — the contrast between movement and stillness, light and weight. The shoreline curves gently toward the horizon, guiding the eye into the oncoming weather, while the birds add a quiet sense of scale and transience. It’s a moment that feels held, just before everything changes.

This piece works particularly well in calm, neutral spaces — living rooms, bedrooms, or offices — where its cool tones and open composition can create a sense of pause. It’s a grounding image, one that brings atmosphere without overwhelming a room.
