Before the Wake

This photograph was taken at Iveagh Bay on Lake Brunner, on the West Coast of the South Island, just before dawn.

The lake was completely still. No boats. No movement. Only low light, heavy cloud, and the quiet tension that sits in a place before it wakes. In a few hours this shoreline would be busy and loud — but at this moment, it belonged only to itself.

I was drawn to the restraint here. The way the jetty reaches out without urgency. The water holding its reflection without distortion. The sense that nothing needs to happen yet.

This image works beautifully in reflective spaces — bedrooms, hallways, or quiet living areas. Places where calm isn’t decorative, but grounding.
