Between Passes

Location: West Coast, South Island, New Zealand

Orientation: Landscape

This photograph was taken in the Otira Gorge, between Arthur’s Pass and the West Coast.

The light was shifting quickly — low cloud moving through the valley, mist catching in the folds of the mountains, and brief breaks where the structure of the viaduct revealed itself. What stopped me wasn’t just the scale of it, but the contrast: a single engineered line cutting cleanly through an otherwise untamed landscape.

I like how the road draws the eye forward, disappearing into cloud, while the river below works in the opposite direction — restless, fractured, finding its own way through the gorge. It’s a scene that holds tension between control and surrender.

In monochrome, the image becomes less about place and more about form, light, and movement. The textures deepen. The atmosphere thickens. It feels quieter, heavier — a moment suspended between arrival and departure.

This photograph works well in spaces that invite reflection — places where journeys, decisions, and pauses matter as much as destinations.
