Crater Line

Taken on Mt Eden (Maungawhau), this photograph looks back across the crater toward the summit, using simple light to reduce the scene to form, shadow, and human presence. The figures are rendered as silhouettes against a soft sky, turning a familiar Auckland landmark into something quieter and more graphic.

What I’m drawn to here is the balance between scale and intimacy — the solidity of the landform set against small, fleeting human moments. People pause, lean, walk, and gather, their outlines briefly defining the rim before disappearing again. Stripped of colour, the image becomes about rhythm, spacing, and the way light reveals structure rather than detail.

This piece works particularly well in a living space, stairwell, or office — somewhere with room to breathe — where its horizontal flow and contrast can anchor a wall without overpowering it, offering a calm but unmistakably Auckland presence.
