Driftwood Chalice

Driftwood Chalice

Location: West Coast, South Island, New Zealand

Orientation: Landscape

This photograph was taken on Hokitika Beach during the annual driftwood festival, where the shoreline briefly becomes a gallery of found sculpture.

What drew me to this piece was its unmistakable form. A chalice — shaped not by hand, but by tide, weather, and time. There’s something quietly ceremonial about it, standing open to the sky, holding nothing and everything at once.

Captured in black and white, the image strips the scene back to form and contrast. The absence of colour allows the shape to carry the meaning — part offering, part vessel, part question.

It’s a piece about impermanence and ritual. About objects that feel significant even when they serve no practical purpose.

This image works well in reflective spaces — studies, bedrooms, or anywhere that welcomes stillness and a sense of quiet symbolism.
