Holding the Line

This photograph was taken early one morning at Cheltenham Beach on Auckland’s North Shore.

At that hour the light is generous but fleeting. The sky is still warming up, while the ocean has already found its rhythm. I chose to give more space to the water than the sky — letting the movement carry the image rather than the horizon.

Using intentional camera movement, I worked with the tide rather than against it. The result isn’t a record of the scene, but a response to it. A piece that feels dynamic and warm, but also open — alive with possibility rather than resolution.

It’s an image that shifts depending on how you arrive to it. Some days it feels calming. Other days it carries quiet energy.

It works particularly well in bedrooms, studies, or calm living spaces — places where the day begins or ends, and where light can move gently across the print.
