Learning the world

Location: St. Louis, Senegal

Orientation: Landscape

This photograph was taken in St Louis, Senegal.

I came across these children mid-moment — playing, watching, testing boundaries, learning how to take up space with one another. Nothing posed. Nothing performed for the camera.

What draws me back to this image is how much is happening at once.
Confidence and hesitation.
Leadership and imitation.
Joy, tension, curiosity — all sitting side by side.

It’s delicate and powerful in equal measure.
Raw. Real. Unfiltered.

For me, this is street photography at its best — when you don’t interrupt the moment, you simply recognise it and respond. The image doesn’t explain itself. It invites you to stay with it long enough to notice what keeps revealing itself.

This is a photograph that works in shared environments — offices, studios, places where people gather — because it holds attention without demanding it. Each time you return to it, something new steps forward.
