Longest Light, Lake Wakatipu

This photograph was taken on our first family holiday to Queenstown, looking across Lake Wakatipu in the early morning light.

Wakatipu is the longest lake in New Zealand, stretching deep into the Southern Alps, and there’s a sense of scale here that both teens and adults can’t help but feel. The surface of the water sits calm, grounded beneath mountains that rise abruptly and hold low cloud like a quiet curtain.

What drew me here was the light — soft, cool, and expansive — and the way it carved the peaks into layered forms rather than shapes. It was one of those moments that felt bigger than the trip itself.
