Looking Ahead, Bethells Beach

This photograph was taken at Bethells Beach, on Auckland’s west coast.

A lone rider moving across the dunes.
A low sky.
Nothing else competing for attention.

What draws me back to this image is its calm.
The sense of forward motion without urgency.
The way the rider is upright, looking ahead, held against the scale of the landscape rather than lost within it.

There’s a quiet confidence here — not about speed or spectacle, but about space. The contrast between dark ground and open sky does the work. Everything unnecessary falls away.

For me, this photograph settles a room.
It doesn’t crowd the space.
