Rolling, Dakar

Taken from a moving bus in Dakar, moments after a torrential downpour. The city had paused — then snapped back into motion.

A boy rolls a tyre down the street, a simple act that becomes the centre of a much larger scene. Behind him, life continues: men gathered in a doorway, the interior and exterior worlds briefly aligned. There’s a natural symmetry to the frame — the open doors, the circular tyre, the forward motion — but nothing here is staged.

By the time I took this photograph, I’d spent weeks in the city and learned how to anticipate moments like this while on the move. Timing, patience, and letting the street reveal itself.

What I love about this image is how much it holds. Play and responsibility. Stillness and momentum. A fleeting childhood moment, set against the constant hum of urban life.
