Rough and Ready

This photograph was taken at Piha — one of those places that defines the New Zealand summer.

The surf is big and unpredictable, the sand dark and heavy underfoot. People move with purpose here — boards under arms, eyes on the water — knowing the ocean sets the rules.

I was drawn to the space and contrast. The figures crossing paths, the tracks carved into the sand, the cliff holding everything in place. Nothing posed. Just people inhabiting the landscape, reading it, respecting it.

This image is about the rough-edged beauty of the West Coast. About days spent walking, swimming, surfing — and letting the mood of the place shape the experience.
