Waiting for the crossing

Location: Gorée Island, Senegal

Orientation: Landscape

This photograph was taken on, Gorée Island, off the coast of Senegal, at the end of a long and emotionally heavy day.

We were waiting for the ferry back to the mainland.
The light was dropping fast.
The air had shifted.

As we stood there, a small group of locals arrived at the shoreline, returning from fishing — their boats cutting dark shapes against the water as the sky burned out behind them.

Nothing dramatic happened.
And yet everything felt loaded.

The island carries history.
The present carries on.

What stayed with me was the contrast — the quiet dignity of work, the rhythm of the sea, and the sense of standing in a place where so much has passed through before you.

Silhouette felt like the only honest way to hold it.
Letting shape, posture, and light do the talking.
Leaving space for reflection rather than explanation.

This image belongs in living spaces where people pause — rooms that can hold both beauty and gravity, and where a photograph isn’t just decorative, but quietly present.
